There are approximately 100.000 small farmers in CR who own between 10 and 100 acres each. They represent the bulk of local food production, not controlled by international food companies.
Through the promotion of our tropical agroforestry model, we plant, establish and research underutilized crop species like breadfruit alongside smallholder farmers and promote value added supply chains to ensure their economic stability while providing health & nutrition to the soil, the farmer & family, and the final consumer.
MEET
BREADFRUIT
It’s like a potato, it’s gluten free and grows on a tree
The most ecological carbohydrate in the World.
One tree can produce 300 lbs of fruit per year
FOOD FORESTS = AGROFORESTRY SYSTEM
“…is a holistic agricultural management systems that integrates trees, shrubs, and edible perennial plants to provide multiple crops resistant to pest and diseasesˮ
(Breadfruit Agroforestry Guide, C. Elevitch and D. Ragone, p.2)
THE JUNGLE PROJECT
MODEL
Planting high-value traditional crops and breadfruit based food forests
Sharing best practices of resilience, production & sustainability
Creating resilient supply webs for small farmers
The tropics are the lungs of the earth
The World is losing tropical forests at a rate of 37 million acres per year.
Industrial agriculture is the cause of this deforestation.
BUT THERE IS A BETTER WAY
Food forests mean hope.
They sequester carbon, clean water, build soil, and bring health and
wealth to tropical communities.
